From representing PADI at the prestigious Malaysia International Diving Exhibition (MIDE) to attending the PADI Mermaid Instructor Workshop and an inspiring PADI Mermaid gathering in Kuala Lumpur, Angelia’s month was packed with opportunities to share her passion for mermaiding and ocean conservation with a wide audience. Representing PADI at MIDE 2024
The Malaysia International Diving Exhibition (MIDE) is one of the largest diving expos in Asia, attracting divers, ocean enthusiasts, and marine conservationists from around the world. This year, Angelia had the privilege of representing PADI as one of their official mermaid instructor trainers by assisting on the PADI booth. It was an extraordinary experience, as she stood alongside diving professionals, promoting the growing world of PADI mermaid courses and ocean education.
“MIDE 2024 was such an inspiring event. The energy and enthusiasm of everyone who attended made it clear that mermaiding is becoming more than just a niche hobby—it’s a lifestyle that many people are eager to embrace,” Angelia shared. “I had the chance to speak with aspiring mermaids, divers, and ocean lovers about the PADI Mermaid Course and the opportunities it offers for both fun and career development.”
MIDE also gave Angelia a platform to speak about marine conservation, something very close to her heart. “Being a mermaid is about more than just swimming in a tail,” she explained. “It’s about fostering a deep connection with the ocean and taking steps to protect it. I’m grateful to PADI for giving me the chance to share that message with such a large audience.”
PADI Mermaid Instructor Workshop in Kuala Lumpur
In addition to representing PADI at MIDE, June saw Angelia attending the highly anticipated PADI Mermaid Instructor Workshop in Kuala Lumpur. This workshop was designed for certified mermaid instructors who want to expand their skills, learn the latest techniques, and stay up to date with PADI’s standards for teaching mermaids.
As a newly certified PADI Mermaid Trainer, Angelia was thrilled to participate in the workshop alongside other experienced instructors from across Malaysia. The event was led by the PADI Regional Manager for Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei, and covered a range of topics, including advanced teaching methods, mermaid safety, and improving student engagement during mermaid courses.
“We explored new ways to make the mermaid courses more interactive and fun for students, while ensuring that they learn essential safety protocols and underwater techniques.” Angelia shared.
One of the highlights of the workshop was the practical training session, where Angelia had the chance to teach the new mermaid skills in the pool to the attending PADI Mermaid Instructors.
PADI Mermaid Gathering in Kuala Lumpur
June didn’t stop there for Angelia! After the workshop, she also attended the PADI Mermaid Gathering in Kuala Lumpur—a social event that brought together mermaid enthusiasts, PADI instructors, and ocean advocates from all over Malaysia. This gathering was a celebration of the growing mermaid community and a chance for everyone to share their experiences, ideas, and love for the ocean.
The gathering was filled with vibrant energy, as mermaids of all levels—from beginners to seasoned instructors—came together to discuss their personal journeys, challenges, and aspirations. For Angelia, it was a heartwarming experience. “There’s something so special about being part of the mermaid community,” she said. “Everyone is so supportive and passionate about what they do. It was wonderful to meet so many like-minded people who share the same love for the sea.”
At the gathering, Angelia also shared her experiences of mermaiding in Kota Kinabalu and Sabah, two of the most beautiful and sought-after mermaid destinations in Malaysia. With their clear, warm waters and rich marine life, these locations offer a perfect environment for taking a mermaid course or participating in a mermaid retreat.
