Angelia’s Mermaid Adventures
Have you always dreamed of swimming like a mermaid?
Whether you’ve watched videos online, seen stunning underwater photographs, or simply wanted to try something completely different, your first PADI Mermaid course is probably much more relaxed, fun, and achievable than you imagine.
One of the questions we get asked most at Malaysia Mermaid Club is:
“I’ve never worn a mermaid tail before. Can I still do the course?”
The answer is absolutely!
In fact, most of our students have never tried mermaiding before they join us.
Our courses are designed specifically for beginners, and by the end of your first session you’ll be amazed at how quickly your confidence grows in the water.
Let’s take a look at exactly what happens during your first PADI Mermaid course.
Why Choose a PADI Mermaid Course?
Unlike simply renting a mermaid tail and jumping into a swimming pool, a PADI Mermaid course teaches you the proper techniques, safety skills and underwater confidence needed to become a safe and graceful mermaid.
PADI has spent decades developing world-class training systems, and now that same experience has been brought into the exciting world of mermaiding.
When you complete your course, you’ll earn an internationally recognised PADI Mermaid certification, allowing you to continue your mermaid journey anywhere in the world.
Whether your goal is fun, fitness, underwater modelling or eventually becoming a Mermaid Instructor, it all starts here.
Who Can Join?
One of the best things about mermaiding is that almost anyone can learn.
You don’t need to be an Olympic swimmer or have previous diving experience.
Our beginner courses are suitable for:
- Complete beginners
- Children (minimum age requirements apply)
- Teenagers
- Adults
- Families
- Cosplayers
- Underwater photography enthusiasts
- Anyone looking for a unique new hobby
As long as you’re comfortable in the water and meet the basic swimming requirements, you’re ready to begin.
Before You Even Get Into the Water

Many people imagine they’ll be handed a tail and told to start swimming.
That’s definitely not how a professional PADI Mermaid course works.
Your instructor first explains:
- How mermaid tails work
- How to safely enter and exit the water
- Breathing techniques
- Body positioning
- Safety procedures
- Pool etiquette
- Equipment care
This short briefing helps everyone feel comfortable before the practical session begins.
Learning the Mermaid Kick
The first skill you’ll learn is the famous dolphin kick.
Rather than kicking your legs separately like freestyle swimming, you’ll move both legs together in one smooth wave-like motion.
Don’t worry if it feels strange at first.
Almost everyone laughs during their first few attempts!
Within a surprisingly short time, most students naturally begin moving through the water exactly like a mermaid.
Your instructor will guide you step-by-step until the movement becomes comfortable.
Getting Comfortable Wearing Your Mermaid Tail
For many students, wearing the tail is the most exciting part of the day.
At Malaysia Mermaid Club we provide professionally maintained PADI-approved mermaid equipment, so you don’t need to buy anything before your course.
Your instructor will show you:
- How to put the tail on correctly
- How it should fit
- How to move safely
- How to remove it quickly if needed
One of the biggest surprises for new students is how comfortable the tail feels once they’re in the water.
Building Confidence Step by Step
Nobody expects perfection on Day One.
Our instructors introduce each new skill gradually.
You’ll start in shallow water before progressing at your own pace.
Typical beginner skills include:
- Floating comfortably
- Surface swimming
- Proper dolphin kicks
- Gentle turns
- Safe stopping
- Controlled breathing
- Basic underwater swimming
Every student progresses differently, and that’s completely normal.
Our goal isn’t speed.
It’s confidence.

Learning Mermaid Safety
One thing that makes a PADI Mermaid course different from simply swimming with a tail is the strong focus on safety.
You’ll learn:
- Buddy procedures
- Safe breath-hold practices
- How to avoid overexertion
- Proper recovery breathing
- Safe pool behaviour
- Emergency procedures
These skills make mermaiding enjoyable for years to come.
What Should You Bring?
The good news is, not very much.
We recommend bringing:
- Swimsuit
- Towel
- Water bottle
- Hair tie (if needed)
- Change of clothes
- Positive attitude!
We provide the specialist equipment you’ll need during the course.
What If I’m Nervous?
This is probably the biggest concern we hear. The reality? Almost every student arrives feeling slightly nervous.
Within the first twenty minutes those nerves usually disappear.
Our instructors create a relaxed, supportive atmosphere where students can learn without pressure.
There’s no competition. No rushing. Just plenty of encouragement.
Many students leave saying:
“I wish I’d done this years ago.”
Can I Take Underwater Photos?

One of the highlights of completing your first mermaid course is capturing beautiful underwater memories.
Many students love celebrating their achievement with underwater photographs.
Depending on your course package, professional underwater photography may also be available.
Your instructor will let you know the best opportunities during the day.
Your Mermaid Journey Doesn’t Stop Here
Completing your beginner certification is only the start.
As your confidence grows, you can continue through additional PADI Mermaid programmes.
| COURSE | Best For | What You’ll Learn |
| PADI Discover Mermaid | No experience needed to try | A mermaid experience |

Angelia’s Tip
“Don’t worry about looking graceful straight away. Every mermaid starts somewhere. Focus on enjoying the experience, learning the techniques, and having fun. The confidence and elegance will naturally come with practice.”
— Angelia, Lead Mermaid Trainer
